Glazed Bricks at 40 Beak Street – Damien Hirst’s new London Studio and Sticks’N’Sushi new restaurant
This Glazed Brick project at Beak Street in Soho is the BDA Double Award Nominated project by Stiff and Trevillion. Nominated in the categories for Best Commercial and Best Craftmanship. The Glazed Brick team at NRTaylor are looking forward to hearing the results on the 8th of November 2018.
The Design
40 Beak Street is built using bespoke glazed bricks. The colour was specifically designed for the project and consists of multi layers of glazing. Because of the layout of piers and spandrels, the brick design consisted of over 150 different special shapes. There were two of everything as we had a base colour and top colour.
A glazed brick façade in tones of Sea Blue & Green sits alongside a decorative corner reveal/cornice. Artist Lee Simmons has created a unique and visually stunning piece of artwork to frame the brickwork.
who are the new owners?
We were delighted to hear that Damien Hirst has announced that 40 Beak Street will be his new London Studio. This follows a restructure of his art and business operations, which will enable him to focus more closely on creative work.
The ground floor will be occupied by a new Sushi restaurant to be opened in Spring 2019. Sticks and Sushi already have sites at Wimbledon, Covent Garden, Greenwich, Canary Wharf, Cambridge, Oxford, Victoria and Kings Road. Beak Street will be a fantastic addition to the group and more importantly to Sushi lovers in Soho!
The contractors
Henry Construction Projects Ltd worked tirelessly to deliver an outstanding building. The restricted space on site and complexity of the façade meant that the glazed brick factory had to package all bricks into separate piers and spandrels. Therefore, each brick was labelled and Veretec painstakingly produced drawings to map the location of each brick.
The brick laying subcontractor, Claylens Mills scheduled deliveries to suit the progress of each elevation. The bricks were set out for each pier and spandrel before being carefully laid.
Every time I walk past the building it takes on a new character. The design of the piers reflects the high gloss appearance of the glazed bricks making the building come alive. A building which has been designed with artistry in mind is now housing an artist, perfect!
